Language Arts: Reference: Wood Song by Gary Paulsen
As a facilitator one of my responsibilities is to assist teachers in integrating video and
digital images. The 6th grade language arts/reading teacher fixing to start reading the
book, Wood Song, by Gary Paulsen. She integrated the Iditarod as an introduction to
the upcoming assignment. I assisted her on 3-9-12 to show the students a video about
Iditarod Dog Race. Students selected a musher that they will track and log during the
entire race. I assisted the teacher in setting up the video and tools to use during the
lesson on her computer. The video allowed students to visualize the race and see their
musher in the competition. The internet site: http://iditarod.com/ is used by the students
to complete their logs and status if the check points. Students would be able to access
the site from the classroom computer by the link provided or through the Smart board
during the beginning of class. The teacher will have a desktop link to the log required
and race results. In addition to this tools the teacher also displayed actual items from past
Iditarod races that she received from a friend who searching the trails after the race,
collecting items discarded by the mushers, making excellent visuals along with the videos
segments. Students of all learning diversities are able to successful track, watch and log
the path of their assigned musher. The deaf student within her class is able to read the
information on the close caption option of the video.
